Homework 5: Variable-Length Records & Multiple-Record Files

Monday, October 18, 1999 at the start of class
(but don't skip class to finish this assignment!)

Goal

To really think through the concepts of variable length records and multiple-record files.

Reading

Read Uckan Chapter 2.

Assignment

Do Programming Exercise #2. As described, come up with at least 3 designs with various combinations of:

- fixed-length and variable-length records

- single-record and multiple-record files

- one or two files

If you do more than 3 designs, you will get extra credit.

Be sure to describe the advantages and disadvantages of each design.

Note: there is no programming for this assignment. It is a pencil & paper exercise. Also, you do not need to draw the actual internal blocks, as we did in class.
