Selected Questions From Past Exams

Note: There is room for synthesis in answering each of these questions, even if it is not readily apparent from the question.

There are many factors which make people think and act differently from others. In what ways does this impact information systems? Be sure to define the specific factors you are using to illustrate an impact on information systems.

In light of advancing technology which facilitates better communication and sharing of information, what are some positive and some negative consequences you can foresee arising in terms of the quality of human relationships, society and business practice?

Define the concept of a DSS. Discuss at least two potential positive effects and at least two potential negative effects of using DSS for decision making in organizations. Are there any preventive actions to reduce the possibility of the negative effects you have mentioned. Are there any necessary actions to obtain the positive effects. Consider both individual DSS and large organizational DSS.

Discuss the role of information systems in the value chain for a manufactured product. Which part(s) of the value chain is/are most benefited by information systems, and why?

Huber (1983) in his article suggests that it is useless to study cognitive style in MIS and DSS design. What is your own view on this issue? Justify your position by using information from the text and articles we covered in class.

Bandyopdhyay (1977), in his review of Information Theory, describes three separate schools or paradigms for understanding the nature of information. Explain each in 2 sentences, For each one present an example of functionality for a decision support system design using that particular school as the foundation of the design.

Compare Malone et al.'s (1987) view of electronic markets and hierarchies with Riggens & Rhee's (1998) framework for electronic commerce networks.
