What to Do Before Class for CIS677 Spring 2001 (Distance Section)

Version 2 - 1/16/2001
Note: We've canceled the on-campus orientation for 1/17 - more details on WebBoard.

Hi Everyone and Welcome to CIS677!

CIS677 is a great course. It's a lot of work, but you should get a lot out of the course.

Before Classes Start

(1) In preparation for class you need to get an account on NJIT's Virtual Classroom system, WebBoard. This is how we all will communicate across the semester.

To get an account and register in the class conference, follow the instructions at: http://www.cis.njit.edu/~bieber/CIS677S01/webboard.html

(2) Check out any getting-started comments in the "General Admin" and "General Admin - Distance Sections" conferences.

(3) Follow all the instructions given by Distance Learning regarding the textbook, CD-ROM and all other organizational and administrative aspects of the course. The website for distance learning is:  http://www.njit.edu/DL/

We will be using the following text:

Zwass, Vladimir, Foundations of Information Systems, 4th Edition, Irwin/McGraw-Hill, 1998.

Class Preview

Read the syllabus at: http://www.cis.njit.edu/~bieber/CIS677S01/syllabus.html

Read the "Course Flow" notes to get a feel for how class will proceed each week: http://www.cis.njit.edu/~bieber/CIS677S01/course-flowdl.html Don't worry if it seems overwhelming right now - we'll be easing into it and it will become second nature as we get into things :-)

All class materials will be posted on the class web site: http://www.cis.njit.edu/~bieber/CIS677S01.

Once Classes Begin

All instructions for the course will be on the class web pages and in WebBoard.  Make sure you keep up with your assignments and enter WebBoard regularly to enter class discussions.

Final Exam

The final exam will be done collaboratively on-line.  There is no need to get a proctor or to come to Newark.  The course has no midterm exam.

And again, Welcome!

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone on-line and working with you this semester.
